A Guide to Winter Pest Control

Although many of the most common
pests are more prevalent in the summer – who hasn’t had flies spoil their
picnic? – and insects certainly thrive in the warmer weather, the winter is not
free of pests by any means. Indeed, many pests will seek out warmer conditions
in homes during the colder months.
Of course, there are preventative
measures that you can take to stop a home invasion of pests and to control them
if they do get inside.
Mice are especially prevalent inside
during the winter months as they seek out somewhere warm and dry, with a ready
supply of food and water. Mice and rats will come inside anywhere they can and
it’s a myth that a home must be in the city, or the countryside, or dirty.
Look out for evidence such as
droppings or things that have been nibbled, as you are likely to see this
before you see a mouse or rat. They can enter through a surprisingly small
space. Also, be sure to check your loft space or garage regularly too. Catching
them early on is key to avoiding an infestation.
Insects, particularly ants, are a
very common pest in homes and have a penchant for kitchens, so making sure
there are no sources of food readily accessible to them is very important. With
ants, it’s more important to seek out the ones you can’t see because they work
with strict hierarchies and those you do see will be working for those you
