Does Your Business Have a Pest Control Problem?

May 29, 2014 – by Tony Earnshaw

Unwanted pests cause a real problem for businesses based throughout the UK. As well as posing a serious health and safety risk, pest infestation can damage the wider reputation of your business and can even lead to company closure.

UK Commercial Cleaning provides a range of pest control services, and our technicians know how to identify, control and manage a selection of problem pests quickly and efficiently. But what tell-tale signs indicate that you have a pest infestation at your commercial property?

Evidence of droppings and nesting materials

Generally most pests remain hidden from view, however, one of the most obvious tell-tale signs of an infestation is spotting droppings and nesting materials. Rodents and other pests are great at hiding so spotting traces of their existence may be harder than you think.

If you suspect a pest is taking over your commercial premises, keep a closer eye on hard-to-reach places (i.e. behind furniture and under appliances) to spot pellets, urine stains and discarded nesting material. Avoid cleaning up the droppings yourself, rodent droppings and urine in particular carries the Hantavirus which can be transmitted to humans. Enlist a pest control service to dispose of droppings and other materials professionally and safely.

Gnawed packaging and holes in woodwork

Rodents love to feed on leftover food and nibble away at stored goods, gnawing marks on packaging can be an indication that your commercial property is under attack. To prevent further infestation encourage staff to correctly dispose of packaged goods and food waste, and store other packaged goods off the ground.

Insect infestations are a little more difficult to pinpoint, wood-destroying insects like woodworms and carpenter ants leave behind tiny holes in woodwork, which may go unnoticed to the untrained eye.

Insect bitten employees

Pest infestations put your workforce at risk and as a commercial building or business owner it is your responsibility to maintain a safe and pest-free environment.

Insect infestations can raise a number of complaints with employees and visiting clients and customers subject to bites from mosquitoes, ants, spiders, bed bugs, and other flying or crawling insects. Protect your employees from further health and safety risks by calling in a professional.

Does your property have a history?

Commercial properties that have had a history of pest infestations are particularly prone to future pest problems, especially if the right pest control and management plan is not introduced or maintained.

Whilst certain industries may be more susceptible to infestation, looking closely into your company and maintenance records will ensure you are prepared. UK Commercial Cleaning’s pest control professionals carry out risk assessments and provide essential advice to help you keep pests at bay for years to come.
